Auris Energia will begin capturing the carbon dioxide generated during biogas production at its Mäntsälä biogas plant and supplying it for use in concrete manufacturing. Carbon dioxide deliveries will begin in early 2027.
Auris is collaborating on the project with Carbonaide and Suomen Biovoima. Concrete products made using Carbonaide’s technology represent the first commercial application for the carbon dioxide captured at Auris’s Mäntsälä plant.
“The market for bio-based carbon dioxide is developing rapidly in Finland, and bio-based carbon dioxide can also be used in industries other than construction products. We intend to replicate the carbon dioxide capture model implemented in Mäntsälä in our future biogas projects in Finland as well,” says Håkan Jonsson, Business Manager at Auris.
Utilizing carbon dioxide reduces the carbon footprint of concrete, as it decreases the need for cement. At the same time, the captured carbon is permanently bound in the building material and removed from the carbon cycle.
Finnish innovations take carbon dioxide from Mäntsälä into concrete
Auris Energia’s Mäntsälä plant produces approximately 3,500 tons of bio-based carbon dioxide annually as a byproduct of biogas production. Suomen Biovoima will supply the plant with capture, purification, and liquefaction equipment that processes the carbon dioxide into a form suitable for industrial use.
“We have been developing a carbon-negative biomethane production chain for a long time. This project is a major breakthrough in the capture and utilization of biogenic carbon dioxide on an industrial scale,” says Eero Tilsala, CEO of Suomen Biovoima.
Carbonaide purchases the captured carbon dioxide and binds it into concrete products using its technology. Among Carbonaide’s customers, Lakka Rakennustuotteet and Rakennusbetoni- ja Elementti will use the carbon dioxide captured in Mäntsälä in their products going forward.
“This project launches the Finnish market for bio-based carbon dioxide and moves our industry toward low-carbon operations,” says Juho Hiltunen, CEO of Lakka.
“Auris’s investment provides us with a strong foundation to expand our offering of products manufactured using Carbonaide technology,” continues Teemu Teno, CEO of Rakennusbetoni- ja Elementti Oy.
Auris will begin supplying carbon dioxide to Carbonaide and, subsequently, to concrete products in 2027.
